Unit 6 - Cell Reproduction

Essential Standard: Each student will be able to demonstrate that there is a genetic basis for the transfer of biological characteristics from one generation to the next through reproductive processes.

Learning Targets:

  1. Illustrate and outline the stages of the cell cycle (interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis) and explain the result of uncontrolled cell division (cancer)

  2. Outline the process of meiosis including pairing of homologous chromosomes and crossing-over

  3. Compare and contrast the processes of mitosis and meiosis (# of divisions, # of daughter cells, haploid/diploid, compare to  parent cell, type of cells, purpose)

  4. Distinguish between sexual and asexual reproduction, providing advantages and disadvantages for both

  5. Demonstrate an understanding of stem cells by investigating one therapeutic use
